Bathroom, Sutton Place, NY

An original bathroom in a beautiful prewar apartment facing the East river needed an upgrade. The brief called for the bathroom to function both as a proper guest bath and a powder room. Space organization in most New York multiple dwelling residential units needs to respect wet over wet spaces. In order to minimize the risk of leaks further, this building requested a double waterproofing system and to upgrade the floor sound attenuation assembly. This required a complete gut of the space removing existing stone and sub-floor, and installation of a new floor structure with marble floor finish.

The challenge was to fit a shower in lieu of an old bathtub, while incorporating existing location of plumbing, doors, window opening and radiator. The scope evolved into a complete rebuild of the bathroom with new floor and wall finishes, plumbing fixtures & fittings, including lighting and power.

The client wished to reuse the existing vanity mirror with lighting and glass shelf. In order to create a cohesive design and provide for new stone trim around doors and window openings, a tailored marble trim design with in-fill panels of subway tiles and wall covering was introduced and incorporated a base, shower curb and top trim.

The palette was requested to be held in light tones, with soft beige, linen white and natural wood finishes. Shower walls were finished in linen white glossy subway tiles and a Crema Marfil mosaic floor. The bathroom’s Crema Emperador marble floor was designed in a square of four equal size slabs with a framed border. The new bathroom was inaugurated with a bath themed installation for the owner’s NY Art Gallery annual holiday celebration at the residence.
