Master Suite Dressing, Manhattan Apartment
The Master Suite in a New York, Upper East Side apartment came as one large room with an entry hall and a master bathroom. The existing bedroom closet with it’s heavy doors, offered only a single shelf with one hanging rod. Closets to accommodate his and hers, and a private dressing space was needed for this master suite.
To enlarge the bedroom, the entry hallway was reconfigured, and opened up to the bedroom providing valuable space.
A full height “closet divider” was created to provide separation between the bedroom and new dressing space, while also providing significant, and needed storage. White lacquer paneling was applied as paneling and doors to match the built-in closets. The latter span the width of the East facing bedroom North elevation, creating a semi-enclosed dressing room.
Introducing the white lacquer panel as a design element, and space divider also implemented in the West area common rooms of the apartment, supports a gesture to balance the apartment interiors, and create a cohesive design vocabulary for the home.
The white lacquer closet doors seamlessly continue as wall paneling wrapping the former Master Bedroom entry hall, and fold back into the dressing space in line with the closet divider defining the separation between dressing and bedroom.
The new layout offers well organized storage with hanging, shelving and pull draws. Any available space, however small, was incorporated to maximize bedroom closet space. Large custom area rugs anchored the different spaces and emphasized the division between bedroom and a dressing space.
