New York, NY, (July 3rd, 2019) – Eva Jensen Design is delighted to announce that our portable canopy system, Circle Shade, is finalist in Architizer’s prestigious A+Awards program for architecture and design. In 2017, the Circle Shade project was selected from over 180 submissions and won Folly Function Award. Circle Shade is currently competing to become the winner among five jury-selected finalists in the ‘A+Awards’ Outdoor Furniture category. They were selected from numerous submissions based on excellence in the following criteria: Form, Function, Innovation, Intent and Reality. Final decision on July 9th.
ABOUT CIRCLE SHADE
Circle Shade is an award winning refined portable canopy system designed as a Kit of Parts for quick assembly and flexible use. The vocabulary is minimal and clean, based on the structural tripod concept. Harmonizing system with detail, it’s composed of two fundamental geometries: circle and triangle. A single unit consists of 3 main components and only 7 parts: 1 canopy, 3 poles and 3 cylindrical counterweights.
The canopy can provide for branding, and is circular, to roll for ease of mobility. Assembly of a unit can be done in less than 5 minutes by 1-2 people, while the counterweights integrate as outdoor furniture. A single unit anchors a space, and the concrete counterweights serve as
seat, back rest, table top and step stools during set up.
With the challenges of global warming, and need for protection against the sun’s harmful rays, the system offers a new type of space for improved outdoor living quality. It’s flexible, portable and integrates with ease. A unique mobile canopy system serving both as a communal space for people to connect, engage and inhabit and for the individual to enjoy.
Circle Shade synthesizes renewal of current shade structures and portable tent concepts. It eliminates the center pole of traditional parasols, opening and closing maintenance of an umbrella, offering an alternative to square tents, while integrating counterweights as outdoor furniture. The system is created with flat-pack delivery in mind.
The structure sets up for use as single unit or in clusters for gatherings and social events. Circle Shade can function in a range of settings from park landscapes to waterfront, urban environments and public spaces. In sequence the structures create dynamic spaces in open constellation. The playfulness is transmitted through shapes and spaces, and the dichotomy of the structure, light and airy, yet grounded.
“A light and minimal tripod structure anchored to weighty feet lifts a Circle Shade radiating the energy of a wheel. As a constellation in the landscape a composition of playful dynamic structures emerges. It alludes to delightful dancing discs, spinning shadows, and captures cloud follies connecting ground with sky. The spaces beneath the canopies invites people to connect in an open communal space and for the individual to enjoy.”
