New York based #Architecture & #designstudio, #timeless #danishdesign with a distilled approach, connecting people with #culture & #nature

Last week I had the honor of presenting: “Nature-C Last week I had the honor of presenting: “Nature-Culture, Space, Point – A Danish American Design Perspective” at the Athenaeum of Philadelphia/CCAP International Design Series “Power of Place”.

Representing Denmark in this context of cultural exchange, the lecture covered Copenhagen’s urban development since the publishing of Copenhagen capital region Finger plan, 1947, with a focus on Copenhagen’s transformation from near-bankrupt city only three decades ago, to being celebrated as the world’s most livable city in 2025.

It is not only about urban planning, architecture and infrastructure. It is also about how urban design, exemplified by Gehl’s “people- first” approach along with policy, and civic culture aligning to shape and improve everyday life by safe and inviting public spaces prioritizing walking and cycling mobility.

The recent publication “The Copenhagen Way” (BLOXHUB, Rambøll and Urban Partners, 2025) highlights how cross-sector collaboration and long-term strategic thinking have enabled Copenhagen to deliver growth and competitiveness while enhancing livability, protecting social equity, and advancing environmental ambitions. It underscores that transformative urban change is possible within a single generation - and that cities can be powerful drivers of a more resilient future.

Similarly “The Copenhagen Model,” as presented by Bruce Katz and Luise Noring in the 2017 Brookings Institution report, illustrates how Danish design, architecture, and governance have shaped the global conversation on urban renewal offering a 21st‑century blueprint for urban transformation.

For EJD Power of Place describes how nature, physical environments, and sensory experience shape human emotions, thoughts, and behavior, and ultimately become a shared cultural identity. We do not only live in places; places live within us, shaping who we are. As nature shapes culture, culture shapes nature—while Earth remains our shared point in space for all species.

It was a pleasure for me #evajensendesign to prese It was a pleasure for me #evajensendesign to present a talk and be part of the panel on Women in Nordic Design and Architecture together with Jennifer Yoos @vjaarchitects and Suchi Reddy @reddymadedesign
in “Nordic American Connections”, celebrating Scandinavia House 25 years.

It is a four-part series: Nordic American Connections: Conversations on Architecture and Design presenting prominent architects, critics and scholars as they reflect on Scandinavian and Nordic design’s enduring impact in shaping modern American design since the 19th century. The series is organized by ASF with moderator Susan Chin of DesignConnects in collaboration with @centerforarch

Historically women have made significant contributions to modern architecture and design, shaping both public buildings and residential spaces, as well as furniture and textile design. The women architects and designers that led the way often expressed multidisciplinary creativity.

March is also Women’s History month, and we celebrate a century of women in architecture and design. 1925 -1975 is generally considered the era when the first generation of women significantly contributed to Nordic architecture and design.

Before 1925, women pursuing a career in design, only had the option to attend drawing academies, and in Denmark, also the Arts and Crafts School for Women. In part due to this School, Denmark today still has a strong arts and craft tradition.

Women gained entry to architecture schools almost concurrently with the time they gained the right to vote - in the Nordic countries between 1908 – 1919. The first woman to graduate from the Royal Danish Academy was in 1915 the year women gained the right to vote in Denmark.

Circle Shade portable canopy system was conceived in a response to a design brief for a ”Portable & Demountable Shade Structure”
Its based on the tripod concept, and articulated in a minimal design. The canopy was designed as a large ring to roll for ease of mobility. Assembly of a unit can be done in 5 minutes by 1-2 people.

Earlier this week I moderated a Design Book Talk w Earlier this week I moderated a Design Book Talk with Maggie Taft, writer and art historian, for her new book “The Chieftain and The Chair, The rise of Danish design in Postwar America” at Scandinavia House New York.

It’s a privilege to work is the field of architecture and design, and to experience positive cross disciplinary exchange between the different areas that make up and contribute to this industry. It’s both academia, design and architecture practice, R & D, fabrication like @ppmobler and @houseoffinnjuhl, logistics, businesses and special furniture showrooms like @SuiteNY that makes up this “whole” we all are a part of. And thank you to an interested audience, customers and clients- without them we would not exist.

We were lucky to have many of the above areas of the industry represented at the event, both #SuiteNY #PPMobler, which offered such synergy to the experience. A special shout-out to @suiteny for loaning two of Hans Wegner’s Round Chairs for the event. It made a difference.

Maggie Taft has studied and researched this particular period of #danishfurnituredesign from 1949-1966, which is a golden age of great #Danishdesign and #craftmanship.
This book is Maggie’s first book and initial culmination of all her past research work. She offers a perspective of the “whole” industry as an art historian. For me it was fun to emerge myself, refresh and deepen my knowledge of my own design “heritage” and learn more through my conversation with Maggie in the preparation and at the Book talk event.
