Bench Credenza

The bench credenza was inspired by the Japanese tradition for a dedicated piece of home furniture to accommodate footwear storage. We designed this piece to not only accommodate storage, but also to provide comfortable place in the home foyer to sit and shoehorn on and off footwear.

The bench credenza was created with the above functions in mind, and meticulous detailed as a solid oak wood frame structure and assembled with wood joints only. The bench structure was developed for maximum span in relation to the strength of the minimal designed wood frame. The small doors were detailed to slide on a wooden track, and the handles were integrated into the wood as recessed circular pulls with soft rounded edges. The “back” side of the credenza was finished with an in-fill panel in American White Oak to match side panels and front doors so that the piece also can be placed freestanding.

The materials were carefully chosen to tie in with other furnishing in the public rooms and therefore create a dialog. The wood frame was completed with a traditional Danish soap finish, and the seat upholstered in rustic leather from Denmark to match the leather seats on the low PK33 stools in the Foyer and the Egg Chair in the Family room.

The bench credenza offers both seat, storage and a counter for placing keys, cell phone, mail, purse, a table lamp and more. In ensemble with a small bench placed in the Master Dressing, the bench credenza is proportioned and placed in the East West circulation axis of the apartment to integrate and emphasize the overall interior design intent. It outlines the expanse, while at the same time connecting the spaces along the axis.
